Search & Rescue receives SpaceX Starlink Internet

Source: Santa Barbara County Search & Rescue (SBCSAR)

Santa Barbara County Search & Rescue recently became one of the few but growing numbers of Search and Rescue teams to access high-speed satellite internet through the SpaceX Starlink constellation. This is a breakthrough technology for SAR, typically tasked with operating in remote areas with very limited or no connectivity to perform essential search functions such as mapping or communicating with other assets participating in a search effort. This technology allows SBCSAR to operate and function effectively in areas never thought possible, as well as during natural disasters that could block or disable normal communications networks.

Starlink or what our team members like to call “SARlink” will enable high speed internet connectivity literally anywhere in SB County. Set up in less than 5 minutes, the system is highly deployable and compact, offering speeds equal to and often faster than cable Inter. SARlink will be used to enable real-time mapping, field team tracking, subject or aircraft tracking during search and rescue operations. It can also be used to stream video from field locations of our unmanned aerial systems (drones) or from field teams of trail conditions.

Its applications are far-reaching and include, but are not limited to, searches for lost or missing people, wildfire evacuation and evacuation planning, earthquakes, floods and debris flows, mutual assistance to other provinces in need of connectivity and this special resource. It may also be available to other responding agencies here in the county for longer duration calls or operations.

Starlink technology is new and comes at the expense of the team for ongoing operations. If you would like to help offset some of these monthly costs, please contact us or visit our team website for information on how you can donate to the team and help us move forward and stay on the cutting edge. continue to provide the best service to the community.
