LAS VEGASJune 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Iceotope, the global leader in Precision Immersion Cooling, has announced its chassis-level cooling system will be showcased in the Intel Booth at HPE Discover 2022, the prestigious “Edge-to-cloud Conference.” Ku:l Data Center is the product of a close collaboration between Iceotope, Intel and HPE, promising a faster path to net zero operations by reducing edge and data center power consumption by nearly a third.

Once the sole domain of mysterious, high-performance computing applications, liquid cooling is increasingly seen as essential technology for reliable and efficient operations of any IT load in any location. There is an urgent concern about the sustainability implications as distributed edge computing environments are rapidly expanding to meet the demand for data processing closer to the point of use, as well as the increasing power and cooling consumption of the facilities, powered by AI augmentation and hotter chips.

In collaboration with Intel and HPE, Iceotope benchmarked the power consumption of an example of an IT installation cooled with air and precision immersion liquid cooling, respectively. The results show a significant advantage in favor of liquid cooling, reducing the overall power consumption in the IT and cooling infrastructure.

Putting Ku:l Data Center to the Test

To understand the operational benefits of Iceotope’s Precision Immersion Cooling system, the Ku:l Data Center was compared to a traditional air-cooled system with a 19.6 kW load consisting of 16 HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 servers under stress test conditions.

Laboratory tests, using industry-standard high power computing benchmarks for a range of ambient temperatures, showed that the Iceotope Precision Immersion Cooled system enabled a 4% performance improvement without throttling at higher server-level ambient temperatures and consumed 1 kW less power in rack level than its air-cooled counterpart[1]† This represents a 5% energy savings in IT alone and a 30% savings at scale based on a typical cooling power consumption effectiveness (pPUE) of 1.4 in air and 1.04 in liquid cooled data centers.

Iceotope’s Ku:l Data Center solution will be demonstrated on HPE Discover, housed in a standard Schneider Electric NetShelter rack with heat dissipation to a Schneider Heat Removal Unit (HRU). Integration with HPE ProLiant DL380 servers, as well as delivery through channel partners, is provided, supported and guaranteed by IT distribution giant Avnet Integrated. The three companies announced their partnership to provide liquid-cooled data center solutions in 2019

Air Cooling Challenges Overcome with Ku:1 Data Center

Air cooling cannot be used precisely or sustainably to cool high-power chips and processors, and it is widely believed that it is no longer an appropriate approach to ensure a suitable working environment for IT equipment that is increasingly consuming more energy.

Not only is liquid a significantly more effective medium for heat dissipation than air, but each liquid-cooled chassis is 100% sealed, protecting critical IT from the surrounding atmosphere – rendering it impervious to dust, gases and humidity – and creating a stable operating environment . Isolating IT from the external environment opens up a world of potential facility sites and distributed IT locations that until now could not be considered.

Further benefits arise from the removal of the server fans and the need for other air handling equipment from the data center space. Energy consumption is significantly reduced, water consumption is virtually eliminated and noise is a thing of the past.

Unlike air-cooled infrastructure, Precision Immersion Cooling does not require depopulation of racks at higher densities, allowing racks to be completely filled to accommodate more servers and storage devices and/or denser IT loads.

Additionally, Iceotope’s sealed liquid-cooled chassis enclosure easily converts off-the-shelf air-cooled servers to liquid-cooled servers with a few minor tweaks, including removing the fans. This means industry-standard form factors, including edge and data center racks, can be used to house liquid-cooled IT, allowing maintenance and hot swapping to be performed on-site with familiar ease and clutter, without the need for heavy lifting equipment or spill kits.

With the increasing demand for cloud storage solutions, savings of the caliber offered by the new Iceotope Ku:l Data Center solution are becoming increasingly important for damping rack densities. According to Uptime Research, the average density of server racks has increased by 15% from 7.3 kW to 8.4 kW between 2019 and 2020, and the expected introduction of microprocessors is likely to accelerate this trend.
