Is it old-fashioned to put a clock on your nightstand? Maybe, but even in the age of smartphones and smart speakers, I can’t live without it. I don’t like waking up with blurry eyes, still mostly asleep, looking for a phone and still not really seeing the time. And sometimes I want to wake up to an alarm that isn’t my kids screaming for breakfast.
I actually combined the idea of a bedside table with a smart speaker. At this point, the credit goes to the Amazon Echo Dot with Clock, and while I love it, it’s not the best clock display. But I keep it for literally the dumbest reason… in the world.
The Grand Tour alarm clock
Over the many years of using my favorite phone as an alarm, I’ve become somewhat immune. I can easily sleep through an iPhone alarm like it never happened. I’ve tried playing music on an Android phone, but music helps me sleep, not wake me up. I am one of those people who needs a really obnoxious alarm sound to wake up. something that i to have to silence.
And I found it.
I give you, the Grand Tour alarm on the Amazon Echo.
My face definitely lit up as I scrolled through the Alexa app trying to find something that would wake me up. Now I’ve found it and it’s here to stay. There are actually two different alarms with the infamous trio, but I easily picked the most annoying one.
This is how I wake up in the morning with Jeremy Clarkson yelling at me pic.twitter.com/VLnWMHLJBz

If I don’t silence it in a few seconds, it descends very quickly to Jeremy Clarkson yelling “WAKE UP WAKE UP” over and over. Frankly, I’m surprised my wife hasn’t laughed at me yet. But it is effective. No matter how much I want to get out of bed, I can’t sleep because of the not-so-soft tones of Clarkson, Hammond and May.
The genius generates gravity
For someone like me, this is a really great solution to the unfortunate situation of having to wake up in the morning. It adds a little fun to something as boring as an alarm, as well as the worst part of the day.
If you’re not much of a fan, or if the idea of Clarkson’s gravity-generating genius waking you up feels a little strange, Amazon has some alternatives. You can play music or a selection of more traditional alarm tones, or you have a few alternatives under the “celebrity sounds” category.
But if you choose “Man City Football” option, unfortunately we can’t be friends.
On a more serious note, the Echo Dot with Clock actually serves as a nightstand extremely well. The sound quality is good enough and loud enough to serve as an alarm clock or radio. The clock is simple but easily seen by morning eyes, although I wish it had the weather too. For the price, it’s a great piece of technology to use in a place you might not want another screen.
