While a select group of developers got to see Sony’s highly anticipated PSVR 2 headset in in-person demos at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March, most of us haven’t gotten a glimpse of what it looks like yet. All we’ve had are renders of what it might look like – maybe so far.
While it’s been remarkably quiet from Sony about its plans for the virtual reality headset for PlayStation 5, we got a bit of a surprise this week when an indie game studio posted an image to Twitter that resembled a real-life PSVR 2 sitting on what looks like a very large chair (see our guide for everything we know about the PSVR 2 for more information about the headset).

The original tweet was deleted fairly quickly, but not quickly enough to prevent it from being picked up by PS5 fans and shared on Twitter as well as shared. reddit (opens in new tab)†Texas-based studio Bit Planet Games originally posted the photo with the message “Guess what’s coming to PSVR 2?” It then deleted the tweet and reposted the same message, but with the generic Playstation VR 2 rendering we already know, apparently asked by Sony to remove the image.
When users stepped in to make it clear that the deleted image had not gone unnoticed, the studio replied, “It looks like us. On Reddit, a developer of Bit Planet Games, Chris_BPG (opens in new tab)replied to clarify a few things.
He confirmed that the studio had been asked to remove the photo, saying that posting the images was “obviously a mistake”. Twitter.” He added, “It could be that my 3D printing, duct tape and cardboard building skills are on point? It could have been a delicious cake that looked like a PSVR2?”

The fuss may all seem like an unnecessary mystery as we already know what the PSVR 2 looks like, but Sony’s renderings don’t really give us a clue as to the size and finish of the device. This is the first time we’ve seen what appears to be an actual physical copy of the PSVR 2, and it seems to confirm that dev copies have been sent.
The photo doesn’t actually reveal any aesthetic surprises compared to what we’ve seen of the renders, but those commenting on Reddit are divided on the design. Some think it looks sleek, while others think the controllers look big and the headset looks sort of plain without any logo or distinctive design – one even suggested it looked like “some kind of counterfeit Chinese or generic VR- prop headset for stock photos”. It certainly looks very minimalistic compared to the PSVR 1 with its blue LED lights, but it matches the look of the PS5 itself perfectly. By the way, I’m sure it won’t be long after release that we’ll be seeing all kinds of airbrushed or decal plastered mods.
The big mystery for some fans right now is what’s inside the two packs you see next to the apparent PSVR 2. A cable to charge each controller? Wristbands and a microfiber cloth for cleaning maybe? We’ll have to wait a while to find out, as the PSVR 2 isn’t expected to launch until 2023.
