Retrieving objects for a human companion may be an activity more closely associated with canines, but according to animal behavior specialist Jeff Podos of the University of Massachusetts, it’s more complicated than that. dogs are attracted to this type of activity because of an inherent desire to “please people.”
“This is how they get their food and shelter,” he told NPR. “The more they please their owners, the more benefits they gain. While cats just don’t have the same need†
Andrea Tu, Medical Director at Behavior Vets in New York Citytakes things a step further, telling the news channel that cats, in their wild natural state, are “probably more likely to get things and bring them to you than dogs.”
However, the cat in this particular video takes the concept of retrieving to a whole other level. According to the caption accompanying the clip, Meira found herself in quite a predicament after her son dropped her keys into a hole in a block of concrete.
As the images show, the narrow nature of the opening made retrieval by human hand essentially impossible. What they couldn’t have counted on, however, was that a cat’s paw could do the job.
When the first attempts to reach the keys with a stick failed, the black cat intervened, reaching deep into the hole trying to get a grip on the keys. Incredibly, after a few seconds of messing around, the cat managed to drag the keys out, much to Meira’s delight.
Her video ends with the cat lying on the concrete enjoying the sun and a few strokes from a very relieved Meira.
The cat’s success is both brilliant and mind-boggling, as the pet seems to understand their owner’s instructions despite being, well, a cat. Meira seemed momentarily stunned at what unfolded, captioning the video, “If I hadn’t filmed it, no one would have believed it.”
But believe they did, with the images quickly making their way to Reddit, where the four-legged hero of the moment was hailed from all quarters.
Kids-cake-and-crazy said, “Someone deserves an extra treat!” writing with AnyResult712: “I would demand catnip in exchange for those keys. This is a skillful collaboration that justifies all the goodies.”
Iliketaterssss999 thought the cat deserved “a Medal of Honor made of treats,” while JodieFlame commented, “That’s the very best cat video I’ve seen yet.”
PVMas07 hailed him as “smartest cat” and KenshinYusuke added “who says black cats bring bad luck!”
There was also another twist to the story.
According to one of Meira’s subsequent TikTok posts, the cat was not hers, but belonged to another resident who lives on the first floor of the same building.
The cat clearly knew Meira and her son, and he apparently decided to help of his own accord. The good news is that he was rewarded for his efforts with a fun new toy that he has been playing with ever since.
news week has contacted Meira for comment.
