New Eligibility Guidelines Open SoCalGas Energy Saving Utility for More Customers

Recently issued California law increases customer access to free energy-saving home improvements that support SoCalGas’ efforts to lead the transition to a clean energy system

LOS ANGELESJuly 6, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) announced that as of: July 1, 2022, more customers will now qualify for free energy-saving home improvements through the Energy Savings Assistance Program. The new guidelines expand the eligibility criteria for clients with incomes up to 250% of the federal poverty guidelines, compared with the previous criteria to 200%. A family of four living up to . deserves $69,375, are now eligible for free energy efficiency upgrades. The previous income eligibility guidelines were up to $55,500 for a family of four.

The ESA program provides attic insulation, oven repair or replacement, clothes washing, water heater repair or replacement, boiler blankets, door draft excluders, seals, low-flow shower heads, faucet aerators, minor door and window repairs, and other services to eligible customers.

Customers can save up to 20% on their natural gas bills annually, depending on the energy efficiency upgrades performed. Since 2002, more than 1.6 million households have been enrolled in the program.

Customers may qualify for the Energy Savings Assistance Program based on having one person in their home who falls under the income guidelines or participates in a public assistance program such as Medi-Cal/Medicaid, CalFresh, and the National School Lunch Program. The program is open to renters and homeowners, and income levels are updated annually to align with federal poverty guidelines.

The revised Energy Savings Assistance Program income guidelines were the result of Senate Act 756, written by: San Diego senator Ben Hueso (D-40). “The ESA program is an important tool for our state in the fight against climate change,” said Senator Hueso. “Energy efficiency upgrades lower energy bills, increase a family’s quality of life and comfort, support economic development and move the state closer to its climate goals.
